The bottom cowl, trim cover and exhaust parts were of course very greasy. I was powerwashing something else today and decided to clean these a bit. Mostly I wanted to see how bad they are and if I need to media blast them. I’m going to use this motor so it will get scratched so I’ll probably just lightly sand and then use an epoxy primer.

I am curious about the red cap on these nuts. They seem to be fancy acorn nuts. I’ve seen them on my 1959, 60, 61 and 65 motors. A quick Google search made me think that their purpose is to protect your hands from sharp points when lifting the motor in addition to protecting threads from water. I’ll see if the red caps come off when I remove the nuts.
